Records of Ampersand Honor Society, the TCU chapter of Mortar Board, 1932-2012 (inclusive), 1932-1980 (bulk).

 Collection
Identifier: RU 37

The records consist of annual scrapbooks, newspaper clippings, meeting minutes, member selection, organizational documentation and correspondence. The correspondence is primarily with Mortar Board with regards to Ampersand becoming a chapter of the National Honor Society.

Ampersand, an honor society for senior women, began in 1932 at Texas Christian University. Membership was earned though high scholastic achievement and service to the University and its students. Ampersand applied for membership to Mortar Board, the national co-ed honor society, although in the fall of 1939 it determined it was not ready due to financial reasons. The organization was discontinued in 1944 for the war effort, but was reorganized in 1963, continuing its goals of serving the University through various activities. In 1969, it established a scholarship fund honoring Martin Luther King, Jr. After petitioning for membership and waiting the 5-year probationary period, it became the TCU chapter of Mortar Board in 1970.
