Content Description
This collection documents the history of Harris College of Nursing from 1940 to 2019, starting from the beginning of the college's affiliation with TCU to present day. Included in the collection are photographs of students, newspaper articles relating to the history of the college, bulletins, and ephemera. Ephemera consists of newsletters, pamphlets, commencement programs, advertisements, magazine articles and memorabilia. The collection focuses on student life and recruitment, it does not include information regarding administration, faculty, or course curriculum.

Biographical / Historical
Doctor Charles Houston Harris established Harris Sanitarium and a nursing school in 1912 in Fort Worth. Dr. Harris then went on to establish a trust that permitted the purchase of the Fort Worth Methodist Hospital in 1937, which was renamed the Harris Memorial Methodist Hospital. Both the Harris School of Nursing and the Harris Sanitarium were moved to this new location. In 1946, a contract was signed that joined Harris College of Nursing with TCU, establishing a nursing baccalaureate program, with Lucy Harris becoming the first Dean of the college. The program was one of three in the United States that offered the Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing at the time. By 1984, Harris College of Nursing became an official TCU college, ending their relationship with Harris Methodist Hospital. In 2000, TCU rebranded Harris College of Nursing to the Harris School of Nursing, merging multiple colleges into one entity later called the College of Health and Human Sciences.

The collection was previously arranged by Harris College of Nursing staff. Staff arranged and stored the items by decade. Special Collections staff chose to maintain this original arrangement. Each series represents a decade of material, reflecting Harris College of Nursing staff's original organization of the materials.
