Scope and Contents

The collection contains two bound volumes, the first is a New Testament owned by Joseph Addison Clark and handed down to his great-granddaughter Mrs. Modena Clark Rogers Spitler. The new testament is in poor condition with the spine loose from the text block and the cover repaired with tape. The other volume in the collection is titled Biographies and Sermons. There is no publication date. It includes a chapter on the "Life of J. A. Clark" (some pages are missing) and a sermon by Clark, "Scope and Attributes of Christ's Character."

Biographical / Historical

The Reverend Joseph Campbell Spitler, was born in Lufkin, Texas November 13, 1941, to William Marion Spitler and Dorothy Zackary Spitler. He was great-grandson of Joseph Addison Clark, father of TCU founders Randolph and Addison Clark. A graduate of Texas Christian University, Joseph also attended Virginia Theological Seminary and was ordained a Deacon in the Episcopal Church in 1982. In 1983, he was ordained an Episcopal Priest.

Joseph served the congregations at Saint James Church, Conroe and Saint Timothy Church, Lake Jackson before becoming Rector of St. John’s Church in Columbus for 15 years. The last 5 years of his ministry were spent as Associate Rector and later Rector Emeritus at Trinity Episcopal Church in Baytown. Upon retirement, he returned to Columbus. He passed away at age 69 in Columbus, Texas on February 12, 2011 at St. Luke's Hospital in Houston.
